Five Rings Ch. 1: The Ground Scroll — Foundation, Discipline, and Trading Architecture

Military Context

Miyamoto Musashi (1584–1645) was Japan's legendary swordsman, reputedly undefeated across more than sixty duels. The Ground Scroll lays out the foundation of his two-sword school.

Musashi insists strategy is neither flashy technique nor lucky victory. It demands thorough knowledge of the ground — terrain, the properties of weapons, and daily unglamorous practice.

The Book of Five Rings was written late in his life, in a cave, decades after his last duel. That is worth remembering: it is not a young fighter's combat manual but an old man's re-emphasis on fundamentals after a lifetime of reflection.

The Wall Street Translation

The ground is your basic trading architecture, risk parameters, and operational discipline. Most retail traders fail by entering before reading the terrain or establishing a systematic edge.

1. Know Your Weapons and Your Ground

Musashi required mastery of every weapon in the armoury. In trading:

• Know your instruments: understand how stocks, options, futures, and ETFs actually work. Do not trade leveraged ETFs or complex option structures before understanding decay and volatility behaviour
• Know the environment: identify whether the market is trending, ranging, or in a high-volatility panic

2. Daily Discipline Over Clever Prediction

Musashi warns against fixating on a favourite weapon or ornate technique. Real mastery rests on daily discipline: reviewing the calendar and key levels before the open, keeping a trade journal after the close.

3. Constancy of Spirit

"Not any different from normal" is the chapter's most important phrase.

Musashi is not saying be especially calm in a duel. He is saying your bearing in a duel should be indistinguishable from your bearing at any other time. If you must deliberately enter a special state at the critical moment, your ordinary state is not reliable.

For a trader this means: how you behave in small positions is a rehearsal for how you behave in large ones. If you cannot follow rules on trades that do not matter, discipline on the ones that do is fantasy.

Actionable Trading Rules

1. Define your territory: write down your core strategy and do not trade outside it.
2. Put position sizing first: risk no more than 1–2% of total capital per trade.
3. Practise pre-market preparation: never make an unplanned impulsive trade during the session.

The Ground Scroll's counterpart for retirees is the investment policy statement.

It contains no specific buy or sell judgment. It defines the framework within which you act: allocation weights, rebalancing rules, withdrawal rate, and what you will not do.

Musashi's central claim applies fully here: fundamentals are not a stage to get past but the place you return to for your whole life. When a long-time investor's portfolio goes wrong, the cause is almost always at the foundation — allocation drift, unnoticed costs, rules never written — rather than a missing advanced technique.
