The first four chapters argue for operating at a faster tempo and getting inside the opponent's decision cycle. This one confronts a necessary question: does that claim still hold for an individual in modern markets?
1. Boyd's Premise Does Not Hold in Markets
Boyd's framework presupposes comparable decision-makers — two pilots whose cognitive speeds are the same order of magnitude, where victory goes to the tighter loop.
Markets do not satisfy that premise. Your counterparties include algorithmic systems co-located in exchange data centres operating in microseconds. Across observe-orient-decide-act, humans are six to nine orders of magnitude behind.
On the speed dimension this is not a hard contest but a non-existent one.
2. So What Is the Loop Still Good For
The answer is in Chapter 5: the loop's value concentrates in Orient, which is precisely where algorithms are weakest.
Algorithms vastly outperform humans at observation (data ingestion) and action (order execution). But orientation — understanding what an unprecedented situation means, judging whether a narrative has actually changed — remains a domain of relative human advantage, at least over longer horizons.
The implication is clear: individuals should compete where algorithms are weak rather than where they are strongest.
3. Timescale Determines Who Holds the Advantage

4. Reinterpreting "Getting Inside the Opponent's Loop"
Over long horizons the opponent is not an algorithm but the collective emotion of other human investors.
That opponent's loop is extremely slow: a panic takes weeks to fully discharge, and a narrative takes months to be widely accepted. At this scale, operating at a faster tempo means not acting sooner but having already completed your orientation and knowing what you will do while others are still reacting emotionally.

5. An Honest Restatement
Applied to retirement investing, the loop's correct form is:
- Observe: check your portfolio and environment periodically rather than continuously
- Orient: build a framework grounded in long-run history and update it when evidence warrants
- Decide: make decisions in advance while calm, written as rules
- Act: execute when conditions trigger, without re-arguing
Note this version removes the speed dimension entirely and keeps the structural one — which is exactly why it works for an individual.
Actionable Trading Rules
- Do not compete where algorithms dominate: abandon intraday and short-term trading and direct effort at judgments spanning months or more.
- Read tempo as the speed of reorientation: your edge is understanding more clearly, not acting faster.
- Use your one structural advantage: the freedom not to act, which no institution or algorithm can replicate.

Of the four steps, only Orient genuinely matters for you — your understanding of how markets work determines what you do in a crash. Observe, Decide, and Act are best handled for a retirement portfolio by automation: periodic review, preset rules, automatic execution.
