Six Secret Teachings (六韬) Module 3: Dragon Teaching (龙韬)

"The Dragon formation is used for hidden deployments. It moves without being seen, and strikes without warning. It is formless and fathomless, leaving the enemy completely unaware until it is too late." — Six Secret Teachings, Dragon Teaching (龙韬)

In Module 3, "Dragon Teaching" (龙韬), Jiang Ziya discusses the art of military organization and hidden deployments. A dragon in Chinese mythology is powerful, elusive, and able to hide itself in the clouds.

In the modern stock market, the "Dragon" is Algorithmic Trading and Dark Pools. Institutions do not buy 10 million shares of a stock with a single market order on the lit exchange. That would drive the price up instantly and destroy their average cost. Instead, they use stealth, algorithms, and hidden venues to accumulate massive positions without anyone noticing.

The Hidden Deployments of the Dragon

Retail traders see the market as a flat surface. Professional traders understand that there is a massive amount of hidden infrastructure operating below the surface.

1. Dark Pools (The Hidden Camp)

  • The Ancient Text: "It moves without being seen."
  • The Wall Street Translation: Dark Pools are private exchanges where institutional investors can trade large blocks of stock without their orders being visible to the public until after the trade is executed.
  • Actionable Rule: Since you cannot see Dark Pool orders beforehand, you must look for their footprints on the charts. A tight consolidation (a flat base) on extremely low volatility over several weeks, followed by a sudden breakout on massive volume, is the footprint of a Dragon emerging from a Dark Pool. Buy the breakout.

2. Algorithmic Stealth Accumulation

  • The Ancient Text: "It is formless and fathomless."
  • The Wall Street Translation: Algorithms are programmed to buy tiny amounts of stock consistently over days or weeks (e.g., VWAP algorithms). They are designed specifically to not move the price. The chart will look boring, flat, and formless.
  • Actionable Rule: Do not short a "boring" stock that is stubbornly refusing to go down despite bad news. The lack of downward movement in the face of bad news is a massive tell that algorithmic stealth accumulation is absorbing all the selling pressure.

3. The Sudden Strike

  • The Ancient Text: "Strikes without warning... until it is too late."
  • The Wall Street Translation: Once the institution has acquired its full position, they turn off the stealth algorithms and aggressively buy the remaining liquidity, triggering a massive price spike that leaves retail traders chasing.
  • Actionable Rule: Your goal is not to predict the exact day the Dragon strikes; your goal is to have your capital positioned in the "hidden camp" alongside them. Buy when it is quiet and boring. Sell when it is loud and exciting.

In Module 4, "Tiger Teaching" (虎韬), we will look at how to adapt to extreme environments and geopolitical crises, the domain of the aggressive Tiger.
