The Thirty-Six Stratagems Module 1: Winning Stratagems
"When the ruler is enlightened and the general is wise, they can deceive the heavens and cross the ocean."
The first module of the Thirty-Six Stratagems focuses on Winning Stratagems (胜战计). These are tactics used when you are in a position of strength, navigating with the broader trend. In the stock market, these translate to understanding how large institutions operate, manipulating public perception, and executing trades when the macroeconomic winds are at your back.
Stratagem 1: Deceive the Heavens to Cross the Ocean (瞒天过海)
The Ancient Text: "What is seen day and night is not scrutinized. Familiarity breeds complacency. Yin (secret) is hidden within Yang (public)." The Wall Street Translation: Institutional Stealth Accumulation. Large funds cannot buy millions of shares all at once without spiking the price. Instead, they buy quietly during boring, sideways, low-volatility periods. They "deceive the heavens" (retail investors) by making the stock look completely dead and uninteresting while they accumulate a massive position in plain sight. Actionable Trading Rules: 1. Watch the Volume, Not the Price: Look for sideways consolidation phases where down days have tiny volume and up days have quietly larger volume. 2. Buy the Breakout: Don't tie up your capital during the boring accumulation phase. Wait for the sudden expansion of volatility (the "crossing of the ocean") and buy the breakout.
Stratagem 2: Besiege Wei to Rescue Zhao (围魏救赵)
The Ancient Text: "It is better to strike at the enemy's vulnerabilities than to meet him head-on." The Wall Street Translation: Second-Order Trading and Pairs Trading. When a major sector gets crowded (e.g., AI chips like NVIDIA), the direct trade becomes too volatile and expensive. Instead, attack the vulnerability: the supply chain or related sectors (e.g., power generation, cooling systems). Actionable Trading Rules: 1. Find the Pick-and-Shovel: When a gold rush happens, don't buy the gold; buy the companies selling the shovels. 2. Pairs Trading: If you believe a stock is fundamentally weak but the sector is too strong to short safely, short the weak stock and go long the sector ETF to isolate the alpha.
Stratagem 3: Kill with a Borrowed Knife (借刀杀人)
The Ancient Text: "When the enemy's intentions are clear, borrow an ally's strength to strike." The Wall Street Translation: Utilizing Catalysts and Short Squeezes. Don't fight the market with your own limited capital. Instead, use the forced buying of others (the borrowed knife) to drive your profits. Actionable Trading Rules: 1. The Short Squeeze: Identify fundamentally improving companies with high short interest. When the catalyst hits, the shorts are forced to cover, creating a violent upward spike fueled entirely by their capital. 2. Follow the Activists: Buy alongside well-known activist investors (like Elliott Management) who have the capital and legal teams to force management changes and unlock value. Let them do the heavy lifting.
Stratagem 4: Wait at Leisure While the Enemy Labors (以逸待劳)
The Ancient Text: "Conserve your energy while the enemy exhausts himself. Let the enemy come to you." The Wall Street Translation: Patience and Limit Orders. Retail traders exhaust themselves by constantly chasing green candles, over-trading, and paying the spread. The professional waits at key liquidity levels. Actionable Trading Rules: 1. Set Limit Orders at Support: Stop buying market orders at the top of the range. Identify historical support levels and place resting limit orders. Let the panicked sellers come to you. 2. Cash is a Position: In choppy, directionless markets, do not force trades. Sitting in cash earning a risk-free rate while the market thrashes is a highly profitable, energy-conserving strategy.
Stratagem 5: Loot a Burning House (趁火打劫)
The Ancient Text: "When the enemy is beset by internal crisis, seize the opportunity to profit." The Wall Street Translation: Buying Panic and Capitulation. The greatest fortunes are made during market crashes, liquidity crises, and moments of maximum pessimism. When a great company is suffering a temporary, solvable crisis, buy the blood. Actionable Trading Rules: 1. The VIX Spike: When the VIX spikes above 35 or 40, market mechanics break down and forced liquidations occur. This is the time to deploy cash into high-quality assets. 2. Distinguish Between Temporary vs. Structural: Only loot the burning house if the foundation is made of stone. Buy companies facing temporary PR crises or cyclical downturns, NOT companies facing structural bankruptcy or obsolescence.
Stratagem 6: Make a Sound in the East, Then Strike in the West (声东击西)
The Ancient Text: "Create a diversion to confuse the enemy's command, then strike where they are defenseless." The Wall Street Translation: Media Manipulation and Fake Breakouts. The financial media often promotes one narrative while the smart money positions for the exact opposite. Actionable Trading Rules: 1. Fade the News: By the time a narrative reaches the mainstream media (CNBC, front page of newspapers), the move is usually over. The smart money is using that liquidity to exit their positions (striking in the west). 2. Watch for Bull/Bear Traps: If a stock breaks above major resistance on news but immediately reverses and closes below it, it's a bull trap. The smart money made a sound in the east to generate buy orders, which they sold into. Short the reversal.
