Sun Tzu's Art of War Chapter 1: Laying Plans (始计篇)
"The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected." — Sun Tzu
The Military Context
In Chapter 1, Sun Tzu establishes that warfare is not to be entered into lightly. Before a single troop moves, a commander must calculate the odds of victory in the temple. He introduces the Five Fundamentals (五事) that must be assessed to predict the outcome of a war: 1. The Tao (道): The moral law or unified purpose. 2. Heaven (天): Weather and time. 3. Earth (地): Terrain and distances. 4. The Commander (将): Leadership qualities (wisdom, sincerity, benevolence, courage, strictness). 5. Method and Discipline (法): Logistics and organization.
The Wall Street Translation
Trading and investing are the modern equivalents of warfare. Your capital is your army. Entering a trade without a plan is a quick road to financial ruin. The "calculations in the temple" represent your pre-trade analysis.
Here is how the Five Fundamentals map directly to the market: 1. The Tao (Macro Trend): Are you trading with the underlying macro-economic trend, or fighting the Fed? A unified purpose means aligning your trades with the dominant market narrative. 2. Heaven (Market Timing & Cycles): The "weather" of the market. Are we in a seasonal bullish period? Is volatility (VIX) spiking? Is there a major earnings or CPI print tomorrow? 3. Earth (Asset Class & Setup): The "terrain" you choose to fight on. Are you trading small-cap biotechs (highly volatile, dangerous terrain) or large-cap tech (safer, heavily entrenched terrain)? 4. The Commander (Trader Psychology): You. Do you possess the discipline to stick to your stop losses? Do you have the courage to pull the trigger when your setup appears? 5. Method (Risk Management): Your position sizing, margin utilization, and trading rules. Without strict risk management, even the best strategy will eventually blow up.
Actionable Trading Rules
- Calculate Before You Trade: Never enter a position on a whim. If you cannot articulate your thesis, entry price, target, and stop-loss before buying, do not trade.
- Assess the Five Fundamentals: Before taking a large position, ask yourself: Is the macro trend with me? Is the timing right? Am I in the right asset? Is my mindset clear? Is my position sizing correct?
- Walk Away from Bad Terrain: If the market environment (Heaven) is choppy and unpredictable, or the asset class (Earth) is too erratic, the best calculation is to not fight at all. Cash is a valid position.
