Sun Tzu's Art of War Chapter 10: Terrain

"We may distinguish six kinds of terrain: accessible, entangling, temporizing, narrow passes, precipitous heights, positions at a great distance." — Sun Tzu

The Military Context

In Chapter 10, Sun Tzu emphasizes that geography dictates tactics. You can have the best troops in the world, but if you march them into a precipitous gorge (a death trap), you will be slaughtered. A brilliant general first assesses the "Terrain" (accessible, entangling, dangerous) and then chooses the specific weapon and tactic that fits that exact environment.

The Wall Street Translation

In trading, "Terrain" equals "Market Regimes." Many traders go bankrupt because they try to use a Bull Market strategy in a Bear Market. * Accessible Terrain (Bull Market): Liquidity is high, the trend is up. Breakouts work beautifully. * Entangling Terrain (Choppy Market): High volatility with no direction. If you chase a breakout here, you will be instantly trapped. * Precipitous Terrain (Bear Market/Crash): Everything is falling. Buying the dip will destroy you.

Actionable Trading Rules

  1. Trade the Terrain, Not Your Bias: Every morning, assess the market regime. Is the S&P 500 above its 200-day moving average? Are we in a high VIX or low VIX environment? Adapt your strategy accordingly.
  2. Accessible (Bull): Hold the High Ground. In a strong uptrend, buy the leading stocks and hold them tightly. The biggest mistake here is selling too early.
  3. Entangling (Choppy): Mean Reversion. Do not buy breakouts in a choppy market. Buy at support, sell at resistance. Do not overstay your welcome.
  4. Precipitous (Bear): Cash is a Position. When the market breaks down into a bear regime, Sun Tzu says "do not approach." Move to cash or short-term treasuries. Protect your capital so you can deploy it when the terrain becomes favorable again.
